A series of tunnels again and you reach Sestri Levante, the "city of the two seas".
An isthmus of earth in fact connects the rocky promontory of the island (what until the 11th century was) with the dry land, forming at their sides two bays with suggestive names: Silence Bay, occupied by the boats of the fishermen that lazily swing between the waves and Fairy Tales bay. The name was given it by the
scrittore danese Hans Christian Andersen, che fu ospite qui nel 1835.
Every year in May Sestri Levante celebrates this illustrious guest devoting him a festival with a fairy-tale taste: the town is crowded by jugglers, street artists, motley stands, and thanks to a contest the creators of the best fairy tales for children are rewarded.
Sestri Levante offers to the visitor a wide range of activities in every period of the year. The old town is animated by Cafés, shops and restaurants, the sandy beaches are an invitation to relax and to water sports, the beautiful churches (Santa Maria di Nazareth, St. Nicolò dell’isola) are rich in important testifies of the past and several paths connect it with the other towns along the coast.
To enjoy a magnificent panorama not to miss is the path leading to Punta Manara leaving from the old town: from here it is possible to admire the coast from Punta Mesco until Portofino.
