Walk from Via XXV Aprile to Piazza Corvetto and to Carignano

From Piazza De Ferrari, already at the beginning of the 20th Century fulcrum of cultural and economic life of the city, you can proceed through Via Roma to see another representative place of the after ancient-regime age: Piazza Corvetto, an elegant connection among the streets of modern Genoa. Walking along the track of the wall ring dating back to the 16th Century, the itinerary continues towards the quarter of Carignano, located on a hill overlooking the sea south of the old town.

Via XXV Aprile
The ex road Carlo Felice was opened to connect the Savoia’s Genoese residence and the whole axe of the “Strade Nuove” to the Opera theatre, under construction on that time

Carlo Felice Opera Theatre
The building, a neoclassical work by Carlo Barabino, was damaged during the second world war. The renovation, due to political disputes and endless bureaucracy, was postponed until 1987. The theatre is now surmounted by a glazed cusp lit up during the performances. The scene and the front of the hall, taking up the architectural themes of the old town, are really worth seeing; the scene apparatus is extraordinary: its 4 moving platforms, driven by sophisticated computer systems, put it in the forefront in Europe.

Piazza De Ferrari
In the centre of the square you can find a circular bronze mountain dating back to 1936 and in 2001, on the occasion of the G8, other three fountains were added. The equestrian statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi is places at the corner between the Carlo Felice Theatre and the Palace of the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, Carlo Barabino’s work. Inside you can find the Museum of the Academia, housing works of Genoese painters.

Via Roma
The opening of this road dates back to 1872 to connect the mountain ring road with the centre of the city. Dedicated to the shopping, the streets preserves an undoubted elegance, although several shops moved to leave their space to banks. During Christmas Time the parallel Via Mazzini puts up since 1926 a book trade fair and some antique dealers’ stalls. Under the glazed vault you can admire refined lamps and elegant decorations.

Palazzo Doria Spinola
This is the seat of the Prefecture and of the Province administration. Built for Antonio Doria, when Piazza Corvetto was opened it suffered the cut of the right side.

Piazza Corvetto

Monumental Bridge
The structure, constituted by a great central arch flanked by two pedestrian colonnades, is a nice spot over Via XX Settembre.
The elegant quarter of Carignano includes the park housing the Museum of contemporary art of Villa Croce, located in the homonymous residence dating back to the 19th Century and preserving more than 3000 painting, sculpture and graphic works.
